Introduction

The majority of South Georgia is over 1,000 m above sea level, with permanent ice and snow including over 160 glaciers, covering at least half of the island. Its highest point is Mount Paget (2,934 m) in the Allardyce mountain range. South Georgia has a cold maritime climate. At King Edward Point on the north coast of the island, which is more sheltered than other parts of the island, average summer and winter temperatures are approximately 5°C and -1°C respectively.
